TSD College Football Primer: Week 4

Week 4 should be the best week so far for some great college football action.  We get the first matchup of 2 top 10 ACC teams since “W” was president and the first Notre Dame/Michigan game that should matter to people outside of Big Ten country since the 1990′s.

Last Week:  5-5 (15-14)

Last Week Picks That Made Me Look Smart:

Picking Stanford to beat USC and Utah to beat BYU were big for me last week.  Hitting both upsets, plus winning the covering bets made me hit .500 for the week and finish plus $$$.

Last Week Pick That Made Me Look Bad:

Thinking Arkansas could stay within 20 of Alabama was pure lunacy on my part.  The Tide rolled all over the Hogs and my bet was dead by the halfway mark of the 1st quarter.

Thursday 9/13/12

BYU at #24 Boise State (-7.5) 9pm ESPN

The 2-1 Cougars are still sore from their upset loss to Utah, but they are going into Boise with chance to get back into the top 25.  The 1-1 Broncos will have trouble running the ball against BYU and that will give them enough trouble to keep this game closer than a TD.

Friday 9/14/12

(-7) Baylor at Louisiana-Monroe 8pm ESPN

The 2-0 Bears make the trip down I-20 E to the home of the dangerous Warhawks.  LA-Monroe has a victory over Arkansas and an OT loss to Auburn under their belt and would love to give Baylor its 1st loss.  Baylor’s offense will be the toughest the Hawks have faced so far and they will have trouble slowing them down.   I would love to see a ULM win, but I think that Baylor will be able to ride home with a close victory.

Saturday 9/15/12

Missouri at #7 South Carolina (-10) 3:30pm CBS

The Tigers will bring the best offense the Gamecocks have faced all year into Columbia on Saturday.  The loss of DB D.J. Swearinger will hurt SC and if Missouri can hold off the pass rush, they will be able to score some points.  I look for SC to slow down the game with Marcus Lattimore and to use play action to control the clock.  SC wins, but Mizzu keeps it close at the end.

Oregon State at #19 UCLA (-9.5) 3:30pm ABC

I really like this UCLA team and if you have some time on Saturday afternoon you need to give the Bruin’s Heisman candidate Johnathan Franklin a look.  The 1-0 Beavers will have no chance at slowing down the UCLA offense and a double-digit Bruin win will be no surprise.

#2 LSU (-20.5) at Auburn 7pm ESPN

The only chance that Auburn had at a win, proved to be a fake bomb threat in Baton Rouge on Monday.  The Tigers are riding high and should roll the stagnant Auburn Tigers.  This game has lost some of its preseason luster, but should still be quality SEC action.

#18 Michigan at #11 Notre Dame (5.5) 7:30pm NBC

Speed kills and Notre Dame has speed on both sides of the ball.  Though Robinson was my preseason Heisman favorite, he will have trouble getting open running lanes in South Bend.  Brian Kelly has the Irish back in the spotlight and after this game he will have them in Title talks.

Vanderbilt at #5 Georgia (-16) 7:45pm ESPN2

Vandy brings their legit passing defense to Georgia’s high powered offense in a very good SEC matchup.  Vandy gave the Gamecocks all they could handle in week 1 and if Georgia takes this game lightly, they could steal a win.  I just don’t see the Bulldogs taking this game lightly.  Aaron Murray has the talent and the cast to keep the Dogs ahead at the end, but it will not be a blowout against the stingy Vandy D.

#15 Kansas State at #6 Oklahoma (-14) 7:50pm FOX

This is the 1st got to-watch BIG 12 game of the season and it should be a great matchup.  Look for the QB’s to take center stage in this game, with the winning QB getting some Heisman looks.  OU QB, Landry Jones is a household name, but Collin Klein should be.  If Klein can hurt the Sooners with both his legs and his arm, the Wildcats have a shot at the upset.

#10 Clemson at #4 FSU (-13.5) 8pm ABC

The #4 Seminoles have the #1 ranked defense in the nation, but that doesn’t mean a thing since they built those numbers on Murray State, Savannah State and Wake Forest.  The Clemson offense will not be so easy to slow down.  Sammy Watkins and the Tigers have one of the most electric offenses in the nation and should give the FSU D some headaches.  The speed of this game will be a big step up for FSU and don’t be surprised if Clemson scores early.  If that happens, then the upset watch will be on.

#22 Arizona at #3 Oregon (-24) 10:30pm ESPN

77.5!  No, that’s not the line in the Alabama/Florida Atlantic game; it’s the over/under for what will be the funniest game to watch all weekend.  Rich Rod vs. Chip Kelly in the First Team to 50 Bowl.  Arizona’s top ranked passing O vs. Oregon’s top ranked rushing O.  I think the Ducks are a legit title contender, but I think the Wildcats are closer to them than 24 points.  Wildcats to cover and betting the over hard.
